Antioxidants
are substances which help protect cells from the damaging
effects of free
radicals, by breaking them down into harmless components
or by preventing them from attacking cells. Vitamins
A, C and E
are antioxidant substances normally found in a healthy diet.
Estrogen also
has antioxidant properties. Antioxidant drugs are being investigated
as possible treatments for cancer, to reduce the effects of
aging, and to help prevent or treat stroke.
