  Executive Functions of the Brain

Executive function is a broad class of behaviors that are especially (but not solely) dependent on the frontal lobes of the brain. They include such complex goal-directed behaviors as decision-making, abstract thinking, planning and carrying out plans, etc. The frontal lobes are also involved in self-control: such as deciding which behaviors are appropriate under current circumstances. Individuals with impaired executive function (especially following damage to the frontal lobes) may be unable to perform these functions.
