Rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep
 

REM sleep refers to invervals during a sleep period when the eyes move rapidly under closed eyelids. Many scientists believe that dreaming occurs during REM sleep. REM and non-REM sleep (with no rapid eye movements) occur cyclically throughout a sleep period. One cycle may take about 90 minutes, and REM sleep may occur for about 20 minutes, usually toward the end of this cycle.
