Anemia is a condition of abnormally low concentration of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the substance in red blood cells which normally carries oxygen from the lungs to body tissues. Anemia may be caused by overall reduction in blood levels (as during heavy bleeding) or by deficient production of blood cells.
